Pam Tillis knows what it's like to go looking for a feeling. From jazz fusion band to new wave band to soul singer and songwriter … always looking for that feeling. A 1980’s pop record for Warner Brothers Records, six 1990’s country albums on Clive Davis’ Arista Records and in 2007, the critically acclaimed Americana charting album Rhinestoned on her very own record label, Stellar Cat affirms Pam’s reputation as restless and unwilling to compromise.
On April 24th, Stellar Cat Records will release Pam’s Latest album, Looking for a Feeling. At times genre defying, Looking for a Feeling is a rootsy ramble with spiritual and philosophical underpinnings and seventies overtones. As Tillis puts it “the music of my formative years was such a cool blend of country renegades, southern rock, classic rock, blues and soul…A whole other world of music was a part of me that I’d not totally expressed until now."
The album began at the analog Welcome to 1979 recording studio with producer and co-writer Jimmy Ritchey, legendary engineer Ed Seay and a veritable who’s of who’s of musicians to add the muscle and swagger to Pam’s sometimes delicate but always passionate vocals.
Tillis found a new creative partner in producer and multi-instrumentalist Joe Pisapia (Ben Folds Five, K.D. Lang, Guster) who as fate would have it lived and worked a mere stone’s throw away from Tillis’s Victorian East Nashville home. Joe and his East side cohorts spent several months looking to bring an indie freshness and looseness to the project. The album features tracks penned by revered songwriters as Gillian Welch, Dave Rawlings, Matraca Berg, Tia Sillers, Mark Selby, Pisapia and six reflective songs written by Pam.
So once again, Pam Tillis went looking for a feeling and found her way to an eclectic gem of a record.
an expressive vocal performance that ranges from a Dylanesque tumble of words to the gritty gospel soul of Mavis Staples.
